In the article Stock indices compared (returns) we showed the very, very different returns of stock indices (between 10 % and 165 % over the last 5 years – as of 30.7.2020).

Why 5 years? For funds, the competence and investment strategy of the fund company (teams) matter. Over a shorter period, a strong increase in value may be more due to luck.

Sometimes the providers mentioned above (5-year performance) may be missing funds or ETFs from their lists. It is better to display and compare the top performers (ETFs + funds) of the last 5 years across several websites in parallel.

Please do not only look at the last 5 years in the chart, but check the performance since the ETF's or fund's inception!

Also check the investment strategy and the stocks with the largest percentage share in the ETF or fund. If a single stock already accounts for more than 10 % of an ETF's or fund's assets, that may be too high a risk for many investors. You can minimise your own risk by investing less money in such an ETF or fund.

We have already recommended the low-cost paid, easy-to-understand guide from the Stiftung Warentest in the article Stock indices compared (returns).

Not all funds can be purchased as a monthly savings plan (from 50 EUR). Please clarify this with your own custodian bank.

Low-cost banks offer a free depot, but each purchase (order) costs something. Prices and fee models vary widely! Stiftung Warentest compared the prices in 2019.

For foreign custody providers, taxation can become much more complicated and time-consuming. Please clarify the issue of taxes on dividends + realized sale proceeds with your bank in advance.

Note: Past gains are no guarantee of future performance. We do not receive any commission/fee from the companies mentioned here.
